Travel Bucket List
I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about autumn that makes me want to stay home AND travel more at the same time! It’s all in the cool, crisp weather, the changing leaves, and the slower pace; I want to curl up in an armchair and read, but I also want to load up the dogs in the van and hit the road, chasing peak leaf season! And don’t even get me started on the sweater-weather! I’d wear a sweater every single day if I could (and I do a lot of the time, because I’m always cold! I guess that’s one good thing about a malfunctioning thyroid, right?).
But I’ve been thinking about traveling a lot lately, especially when I see the beautiful posts by Laerke Ebbenaes (she’s just launched her blog, by the way!) and Sara Ticha! I’ve always been obsessed with Nordic countries, like Iceland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, and am itching to jump on a plane and head over! In the meantime, I’ll just share the my Top 10 Travel Bucketlist. Be warned, though: it’s about to get very hygge very fast, and you’re not going to find a single tropical island.
You know from my post on Hygge in the Summertime that I’m a believer in the Danish philosophy of warm, comfort, and coziness, so of course Copenhagen takes the top spot on my list! I want to walk along the harbor, have a cup of tea in a little cafe, and sit by the fire in the Copenhagen Street Food Market! Of course, I would have to go around Christmas time so I could see the Christmas Wonderland at Tivoli Gardens!
Seriously, is there anywhere more romantic than Amsterdam? The canals, the colorful houses, the bicycles, the cobblestones…it’s enough to make my heart race! I’m dreaming of walking through the city, breaking my no-caffeine rule just so I can sit on a bench overlooking the canals with a hot cup of coffee, and wandering through the floating flower markets!
My love of hygge is only part of the reason I want to go to Stockholm so badly; I’m a huge ABBA fan, and there’s an interactive museum at the Swedish Music Hall of Fame. Nick is not a huge ABBA fan (yet! I’m still working on him), but his love of audio and recording gear - specifically Neve consoles - would be enough to convince him to go!
I’d always wanted to go to Prague, but it wasn’t until I started following Sara Ticha on Instagram that I really fell in love with the city: the architecture, the winding streets, and of course the John Lennon Wall! My first stop, however, would be the Astronomical Clock and Old Town Square; it might be a tourist trap, but I’m dreaming of the views of the city from the bell tower! I have a feeling my no-caffeine rule would be broken here as well (or I’d just consume a lot of decaf), because the coffee culture is amazing.
Oh, Iceland! Honestly Iceland could top this list - or make up the list entirely - and it would still be an accurate representation of my travel dreams. Nick and I have talked about going to Iceland since we started dating, and I’m just waiting for the day that I see a cheap flight! I want to soak in the Blue Lagoon, drive the Golden Circle, see the Northern Lights in a bubble hotel, check out the Skaftafell Ice Cave, and take in Reykjavik (and then try to convince him to move there!).
I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland; my family is Irish, and there’s something about the foggy cobblestone streets, rolling hills, and northern sea that calls to me! Not to mention the library at Trinity College, which has over 200,000 books! I want to wrap up in my Irish fisherman’s sweater, pretend I’m in a Harry Potter movie, and wander!
Yellowstone National Park
Maybe it’s from watching Parks and Recreation, but I’ve had a serious urge to travel to all of the National Parks! Yellowstone is at the top of that list; I can’t wait to camp beneath the stars, go chasing at least one waterfall, and see Old Faithful (of course!).
Denali National Park
When I was younger, I was seriously into Alaska State Troopers. I don’t know why exactly, but I loved the show…especially the scenery! Then my grandparents took a cruise to Alaska and brought back so many gorgeous photos that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it even more: the mountains, the pine trees, the ocean and glaciers!
Olympic National Park
The Pacific Northwest might be my third favorite region in the world (just behind the Smoky Mountains and anywhere cold, cozy, and Nordic). I’m just a mountain girl at heart, and after a friend went on a mountain biking expedition through Bend and Sisters, Oregon, I moved a trip to the PNW to the top of my list! I’d go just for the wildflowers, though, if I’m being honest.
Banff National Park
I could kind of just write “Canada” and leave it at that, thanks to all the gorgeous photos on Instagram, but there’s something about the Canadian Rockies and Banff that I really want to explore. All the lakes, with their crystal clear blue water, and the mountains in the background are calling to me!
