Monthly Must-Haves: January
We’re officially ten days into January, and I’m loving it! The weather has been so mild and we’ve actually had some sunshine (!!!) the last few days, and my brain is in high gear, full of ideas for content creation, recipes, and yoga flows in the new year!
More on that later, even though I’m ready to burst to share it now! But then again, that’s me in a nutshell: do it all now. Patience hasn’t ever been my strong suit, and while I’m learning to allow life to happen in its own time, it’s not the easiest lesson I’ve ever been taught. But life is funny like that, isn’t it?
Now, more than ever, I’m beginning to understand the importance of patience. Of softening and breathing and moving with ease, shaking off the rigidity and need for perfectionism and just being. Luckily, it’s the perfect season to slow down and just be.
My sweet friend Laerke - who is an incredible Copenhagen-based Strala guide with an Instagram account full of yoga, self-love, and positivity + an amazing blog - would call this a season of hygge - the Danish philosophy of coziness, comfort, and ease - and I happen to agree! Hygge is all about texture, light, and warmth, in our physical surroundings and mental and emotional states. I’ve loved hygge ever since I read The Book of Hygge, and have made a point to incorporate the philosophy in my own life.
While hygge isn’t strictly reliant on material goods, there are a few things that help capture the feeling! Read on for a few of my hygge-inspired Monthly Must-Haves!
There are two things I’m absolutely certain of: I’m always cold, and this blanket is the greatest Christmas gift I’ve ever received. My grandma found out about them while getting her nails done and immediately left to go buy them for everybody in my family for Christmas. I’ve used it every. single. day. since then. Not even kidding. It’s so unbelievably soft and cozy…basically hygge in a blanket.
Nick got me this warming foot massager for Christmas, too, and I LOVE IT. It’s not overly intense, but the heat and vibration definitely help my achy feet and legs after a good workout! Plus, it’s lined with sherpa, so it’s super soft.
Okay, so this isn’t a cozy blanket or a heated foot massager, but part of hygge - and part of my commitment to slowing down and connecting - is taking time to do things that don’t involve a screen. As much as I love a good Friends marathon, there’s something to be said of the blissful quiet that comes with reading a book, especially one that teaches you to soften, breathe, and move. Tara Stiles and Strala were my introduction to yoga, and I’ve been inspired by her ever since, so I’ll definitely be reading this book while wrapped in my heated blanket and using my foot massager!
